Join us for our annual Chile Harvest Fiesta where you can participate in the community raffle and stew tasting contest to determine who has the best chile stew in town! There will be both a vegetarian and meat option for folks to try. We will also be providing our newest Chile Fiesta T-shirts for sale, which were designed by one of our youth! There will be music, games, politically themed games, prizes and more. This event is a fundraising effort to help support our fall internship programs, so please come out and support!

Attention: We are seeking artists to participate in the Art Fight happening during our Chile Harvest Fiesta this year!

Up to 10 participants will be eligible to compete to win a $100 cash prize by creating live art during the event under the theme of "green chile"! We will provide canvasses for all of the artists, and the final art pieces will be auctioned to help support SWOP programs. Please share!

We were able to meet with the Downwinders this week to distribute loads of organic chile and melons harvested from Joaquin's farm in Polvadera! This has been a continued part of our work with the Tularosa Basin Downwinders Consortium to help support the work they have been doing to help get the RECA bill passed and further advocating efforts to raise awareness of the impact of the exposure to radiation on communities of color.

We are happy to keep this connection with the Downwinders going!

Join us for a public forum featuring the candidates who are running to represent the Doña Ana village/North Valley area!
This is a non partisan event in partnership with SWOP and the Doña Ana Village Association.

We are grateful to have been able to have Mikyle Gray travel to Phoenix, Arizona to represent SWOP and the CWA Local 7011 Union at the 2022 Human Rights Conference! There was alot of information shared and networking in the short 4 days! There were speakers and panelists from all over who traveled to celebrate their collective work, accomplishments and establish future goals related to the social justice movement and achieving human rights for all. Topics included gender justice, reproductive rights, worker rights, voter suppression and organizing to combat it, critical race theory, and more. We worked in groups to learn about each others' work and share historical facts about workers' rights, civil rights movement, womens' rights and gender justice as well as collectively exploring why right-to-work laws are wrong, and why critical race theory is important. Gender Justice Organizer, Yahaira Carreras, recently attended the Kids Count Conference held by the NM Voices for Children group, which focused on centering youth, children, and family at the heart of public policy. The information and data she received at this conference helped contextualize the direct impacts of the social climate on youth development in NM and around the nation.

WHAT: The Alma Summer Institute and Valle de Oro Mosaic Unveiling
WHERE: Valle de Oro Wildlife Refuge - (7851 2nd Street, SW)

Visit Valle de Oro September 10, 2022 10AM to noon to celebrate the grand opening of the visitor center. Enjoy live music, light refreshments, games and our beautiful new visitor center!  

The visitor Center is now open Tuesdays through Saturdays 9AM to 4PM.

Beginning September 10, 2022 the refuge property will be open an hour before sunrise and an hour after sunset. 

Currently, the west side of Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge is closed to the public due to construction and habitat restoration. We hope to re-open the west side in fall, or winter of 2022.

CESOSS is extending the deadline for their South Valley Hidden Gems project. The purpose of the South Valley Hidden Gems is to highlight the unique and distinct characteristics of the South Valley community and celebrate our resilience, history, and traditions. Creating pieces of artwork that represent the South Valley should highlight and uncover the "invisible social, cultural, economic, and spiritual fabric" that connects our community of Atrisco/South Valley. There are stories and cultural history that are underrepresented. Creating pieces of art can depict and share those untold stories. 

Please submit by September 16th, 2022. Cesoss will be awarding up to 30 local South Valley artists and creative individuals for artworks that tell stories of our wonderful community.

The New Mexico Environmental Law Center is seeking applications for a Staff Attorney dedicated to their mission of working with communities to advance environmental justice and human rights.

JOB SUMMARY:
As a Staff Attorney, you will engage in legal, policy, and administrative advocacy, as well as coalition-building, fundraising, and media work. You will work closely with client communities to achieve client-directed priorities. You will also be responsible, in collaboration with the Executive Director and staff, for identifying, managing and advancing new campaign and litigation opportunities. Staff Attorneys are involved in policy development, advocacy, and larger development/fundraising initiatives that help to support and expand NMELC’s legal services and work.
