Thank you to everyone who voted in the general elections this term! It was amazing to see just how many young voters and same day registrants who showed up to the polls to cast their vote. We encourage everyone to exercise their right to vote, and we also recognize the hardships that many people face such as voter restraint tactics and other difficulties due to a history of incarceration. However, there are several ways and even more reasons to work through these challenges to make your vote count, and we have tools and resources to aid you in this.

SAVE THE DATE: Hoodies 4 the Homeless - Dec 16th

WHAT: YJC Clothing Drive
WHERE: SWOP (211 10th St SW)
WHEN: Friday, December 16th from 10AM-5PM

Stop by the SWOP office on Friday, December 16th all day to donate any used clothing items for our annual Hoodies 4 the Homeless clothing drive! We will be collecting lightly worn/used winter items like hoodies, sweaters, shirts, gloves, jeans, pants, socks, etc. Please consider giving any unused hygiene products like deodorant, toothpaste, soap bars, etc. as well. Thank you for supporting!
 
 
‘Reform around the edges’: Changes to policing have been piecemeal, not comprehensive
 
SWOP was featured in this story from Cronkite News "Reform Around the Edges", which explored how police reform efforts have been piecemeal and not comprehensive.

In this article, local organizers and staff members discuss why reform matters and how police alternatives like community safety teams can help us look out for one another. Others argue reform efforts aren’t enough, and the entire system should be abolished or defunded. Selinda Guerrero was able to speak on her support of the abolition of all police, jails and prisons.

For [Guerrero] and other activists, all reform efforts are insufficient because policing’s roots in slavery, anti-Black racism and colonialism make the system irredeemable. Although a complete overhaul is in demand, it is not the focus.

Selinda says "It’s about what’s missing. That’s what abolition is actually about. Well-resourced communities, healthy communities make police obsolete.”

Project Feed the Hood
PFTH Strategic Planning - Report-back from Nov. 15th

Project Feed the Hood recently finished having their five-year planning meetings. “Thank you so much for everyone that attended and gave amazing ideas to help grow and progress this garden and other community and school gardens forward. We did so much this year including the production area, pathways in the food forest, seating area under the cotton woods, summer youth crews and more. Project Feed the Hood!!! What an amazing year so far and much more to grow.” They will send out notes and next steps from the 5-year planning to the attendees shortly! Stay tuned for more information and ways you can get involved.

Gender Justice Organizer, Yahaira Carreras, has been working alongside our Youth Organizer, Amanda Gallegos, to host weekly meetings with the South Valley Academy interns for their service learning visits with us. They have been learning about SWOP and our campaign work from staff members, as well as the organization's history and our current work within the community. Last week, they learned about the recent election while making homemade pizzas! We appreciate their open minds and willingness to learn!

Julia Bernal of PAA speaks at #COP27
 

Pueblo Action Alliance’s Director, Julia Bernal, is in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt for #COP27 to speak on hydrogen as a false solution in New Mexico, and to demand that both the rights of and consultation with Indigenous Peoples in the Southwest is honored when climate legislation and fossil fuel development are on the table.

On Monday, Nov. 14th, Julia sat on a panel with other Indigenous Peoples from across the globe to speak on “Colonialism, Indigenous Peoples and Climate Change”. Over the past year the all-volunteer Peoples Housing Project worked nonstop to build an urgently-needed mass movement to end the statewide prohibition on rent control in New Mexico. Now, State Sen. Linda Lopez is introducing a bill to repeal the prohibition on rent control! Join us to announce the bill and rally to demand the State Legislature votes YES on repealing the prohibition on rent control in 2023!

Earth Care Hosts Mutual Aid Toy Drive in Santa Fe
TOY DRIVE DROP-OFF
 

Santa Fe Mutual Aid is asking for toy donations for this month's Community Swap being held at their offices on Dec. 3rd. These toys will be gifted to children and families on the day of the SWAP.

They will be collecting from Nov 14 - Nov 29
Mondays 5-7pm, Tuesdays 10-3pm, Thursdays 10-3pm,
We will not be collecting on Thursday, Nov 24.
They are kindly asking for new toys, that are unwrapped, and no toys from dollar stores since they do contain toxic chemicals that are dangerous for human consumption.
Please drop off your toy donations at their SF Office located at 6600 Valentine's Way, 87507 at the designated drop-off times.
Nov 14 - Nov 29.

NM Substance Abuse and Addiction Resources

A group of medical professionals at Help.org held conversations with addiction experts across the US and found that the vast majority of people who need treatment for substance abuse disorders do not seek it. Though there are many barriers that discourage people from getting the help they need, cost is a significant factor. So we created a guide that provides comprehensive information on topics like, available care options, financial support, and free resources that are available in New Mexico.

This guide was created to help the many residents of New Mexico who are struggling with substance abuse and addiction to find affordable treatment that will put them on the path to recovery. It is also intended to inform the general public about the dangers of substance abuse in New Mexico.
