Albuquerque/Bernalillo County has a range of provider services for unhoused people; yet, we have never managed to house everyone and our streets, parks, ditches, and overpasses have become the new “projects." This means that people are generally able to access food and short spurts of professional care but too many people remain left out in the cold/hot otherwise. They have to schlepp their belongings with them wherever they go. There are preciously few bathroom facilities open to them. They have no privacy, personal security, or stability and little hope that things will improve. The only guarantee they have is that the housed community condemns them and will harass them. Seeing as there will probably never be either sufficient traditional housing stock or enough money to substantively change this landscape, what can we--individually, as a community, as a city--do to intervene? This meeting will be a community discussion focused on finding ways in which we can immediately effect change as well as how formal institutions can adopt innovative and realistic interventions for long term impact.

 On Monday April 16, El CENTRO and allies will be present at the City Council for a final vote on Resolution 18-7 to strengthen the status of Albuquerque as an immigrant-friendly city. Our resolution not only recognizes the vital contributions that immigrant and refugee communities make in ABQ, but also has new provisions to protect our families and communities from being targeted, persecuted, and deported by the Trump administration. This resolution is co-sponsored by councilors Klarissa Peña and Pat Davis.

 WAYS YOU CAN TAKE ACTION!

New Provisions in Resolution 18-7:

• Ensure that the City is not using any resources to enforce federal immigration laws.
•Safeguard personal and identifying information so that the federal government can’t use this information to target our families.
• Limit ICE’s access to nonpublic City facilities if they don’t have a judicial warrant and
•Ensure that the City will not enforce any federal program requiring the registration of individuals on the basis of religious affiliation or ethnic or national origin.

In order for Trump to carry out his terrifying vision of mass deportation, his administration is trying to strong-arm local governments into enforcing federal deportation programs. Ya basta! We are better than that in New Mexico and we have the opportunity to stand behind our proud legacy in Albuquerque of passing immigrant-friendly policies by supporting Albuquerque City Council Resolution-18-7.

 TAKE ACTION!

1. On Monday April 16, join El CENTRO at City Council to support Resolution 18-7 to strengthen the status of Albuquerque as an immigrant-friendly city.

Summer may feel far away, but we are gearing up for Slow Food Nations in Denver, CO from July 13-15, 2018. Today, we're excited to launch tickets to the Slow Food Leader Summit on July 13. This is the first event of the weekend-long festival, and is designed for the Slow Food network. If you want to expand your network and be an active voice in the future of food, don’t miss this summit!

The Slow Food Leader Summit is structured differently than last year's delegate day. In the morning will be small thematic meet-ups, followed by a keynote address and breakout discussions in the afternoon. The evening will bring a reception and networking, followed by the kick-off festival party open to the public. We have a limited number of scholarships available. Programming for the rest of the festival will launch in mid April.

Please consider spending your time with two very important events that help families of students- Homework Diner, and the Roadrunner Mobile Food Distribution Day. Along with a monthly grocery distribution, the school provides an opportunity for students and families every other week to share a meal, discover community opportunities, and receive tutoring. Feed the Hood understands that working in the garden with students is only one of many opportunities on campus to better uplift young people and their families! 

At Homework Diner tasks may include set-up/ clean up, helping serve food, occupying activity stations.
At Food Distribution tasks may include set-up/ clean up, assembling and distributing food boxes."
